Leader's message

We’re really keen to talk to you if you’re ambitious, dynamic and can match our ambition for this great city.

A message from the Leader

Councillor Roger Lawrence, Leader, City of Wolverhampton CouncilThank you for taking the time to read this and for your interest in the council and the city. It’s fair to say that we’ve been on a remarkable journey. Recognised as the UK’s local authority of year and most improved council, we’re a council and city on the up.

Our transformation mirrors the success of our famous football club, destined for the premier league. And now we’re looking for a leader from local government’s premier league, following the departure of our inspirational managing director, Keith Ireland. It’ll be a tough act to follow but the good news is that you’ll have solid foundations to build on. So, if you’re a dynamic, highly motivated strategic thinker with a proven track record, this could be just the job for you.

We need someone who can take us to the next level of our transformation journey. We’ve achieved a lot in a short time and we don’t want to let up on the progress we are making, delivering for local people and businesses. That’s why we need someone who’s ambitious, restless even. We need someone who can help us to build our city-level, regional and national partnerships. This is, for me, the next big stage in our impressive story of transformation and public service reform.

And this is a great city to work in. The 19th biggest in the UK, at the heart of regional devolution in the West Midlands. A city with a rich history of a thousand years and a rich cultural diversity forged in more modern times. People from different backgrounds and cultures live here and get on together in harmony.

We’re a well-connected city: by train 17 minutes from Birmingham, 70 minutes from Manchester and 90 from London. Our regional airport is 27 miles away.

The successful candidate will be a champion of our diverse communities, ensuring they benefit from a record £3.7 billion investment in the city.

This is an exciting and exceptional opportunity for the right candidate. So, if you’ve got what it takes to lead the Local Authority of the Year call Julie Towers at Penna on 07764 791736.
